Before changing the plan, improve the decision
A bad session, a compelling promise, or a quick result can change your strategy. Learn to distinguish impressions, evidence, and sound criteria in nutrition and training.

The workout went badly. Before putting your shoes away, you have already found the culprit: your food, your program, the timing, the supplement you stopped taking. The urge to change arrives before a more demanding question: is there enough information to know what happened?
Consider another hypothetical scene. You change your routine after an especially difficult week. The following week, you improve. The sequence seems to settle the matter: the change worked.
Perhaps it did. But the order of events alone does not identify what caused the improvement. An explanation that brings relief may be accepted sooner than one that withstands scrutiny.
In health and performance, better decisions require examining three things: what supports the choice, the observed outcome, and the experience of living with the plan. That applies to the person following it and to the professional prescribing it. A change needs to make sense across all three dimensions.
Fast responses are useful. They also need boundaries
Some thinking produces automatic responses; other thinking allows us to sustain comparisons, simulate alternatives, and examine arguments. Dual-process theories use this distinction to study reasoning. These are models of how thinking works, with differences among them, rather than a map of two independent brain regions. Speed alone does not mean error; deliberate effort does not guarantee accuracy either. Evans and Stanovich, 2013.
In practice, deliberating over every movement and everyday choice would be unworkable. Learned routines are valuable. Trouble begins when familiarity with a situation is treated as evidence that we already understand its explanation.
Choosing a familiar meal and deciding on a major dietary restriction are different decisions. So are performing a familiar movement and rewriting a program after a frustrating session. The second decision in each pair requires information that the feeling of the moment cannot provide.
Devote more analysis to changes with greater consequences, unfamiliar situations, and conclusions based on very few episodes.
Check which question you are answering
“Does this plan make sense for my goal and routine?” requires considering execution, tolerance, context, and progress. “Did I like what happened today?” is much easier.
Those answers can become confused. An enjoyable session becomes proof of a good program. A disappointing number becomes proof of failure. An impressive testimonial becomes a reason to copy a strategy.
To detect that shift, write the decision in one concrete sentence. Instead of “my diet is wrong,” try: “I want to understand why I could not sustain today's session before changing my food intake.” The sentence does not solve the problem, but it identifies what still needs explaining.
Next, distinguish observation from interpretation. “I did not complete the planned work” is an observation. “I need to reduce or increase a particular food” is already a proposed intervention. Information is missing between the two. The work performed, session conditions, and recent routine can guide that investigation with the responsible professionals.

Improvement after a change does not yet prove effectiveness
When an assessment takes place at an exceptionally bad moment, a later measurement may be closer to the usual pattern even without an effective intervention. This statistical phenomenon is called regression to the mean. It is especially relevant when we select an extreme starting point for comparison. Morton and Torgerson, 2005.
Consider an illustrative example: someone changes their routine immediately after their worst recent test and improves at the next assessment. The change may have helped, but the observed improvement does not separate its possible effect from variation that was already present.
Regression to the mean does not mean that every result will necessarily return to normal. It does not justify ignoring persistent deterioration or a new symptom. It means an isolated extreme is a weak basis for assigning a cause.
It is therefore worth asking how the result was measured, whether conditions are comparable, and what earlier observations show. Repeating measurements thoughtfully may clarify the pattern, although it does not turn everyday monitoring into a controlled experiment. The observation period depends on the variable and the decision; there is no universal number of days to “wait for the body to respond.”
The outcome does not tell the whole story of a decision
In classic experiments by Baron and Hershey, participants judged decisions more favorably when they learned that the outcome had been good. Knowing the result changed their assessment of the reasoning, even though the scenarios presented the information available to the decision maker. This is outcome bias. The studies used scenarios described to participants, rather than an intervention involving athletes. Baron and Hershey, 1988.
Applying this to training is a practical inference: a personal best after a change is not enough to justify repeating it. Likewise, a competition below expectations does not automatically make the entire preparation inappropriate.
Assessing the process requires recovering what was known beforehand. Did the decision consider alternatives? Was there a plausible benefit? Were the costs and boundaries clear? Was it possible to carry out what had been agreed? Did new information emerge?
The outcome remains essential. If a strategy repeatedly fails to deliver what is expected, it needs review. The distinction is to use the outcome to update judgment without rewriting the past as though everything had been predictable.
Experience improves intuition when learning can be checked
In some situations, quickly recognizing a pattern is a skill. The literature on intuitive expertise highlights two conditions: regularities in the environment and opportunities to learn them, with informative feedback on decisions. Feeling confident does not replace those conditions. Kahneman and Klein, 2009.
For professionals, this suggests assessing experience in the specific task. Familiarity with a sport does not ensure equal accuracy in every clinical, nutritional, or sporting prediction. Some decisions provide clear feedback; others mix so many factors that getting the outcome right may teach little about why it happened.
Record the expectation before the change: “We expect to observe this, for these reasons; we will reconsider if that happens.” At the review, compare that record with what happened. Writing beforehand avoids relying solely on later reconstruction; it does not eliminate biases or guarantee better performance.
Past investment does not decide the next step
There is another reason to keep a strategy: you have already invested time, money, and effort in it. Arkes and Blumer observed a greater tendency to continue endeavors after prior investments, a phenomenon known as the sunk cost effect. Arkes and Blumer, 1985.
Consider a hypothetical application: you bought a training package and now realize its schedule makes your routine unworkable. The payment belongs in the financial assessment, but it does not demonstrate that continuing is the best choice. What matters is the expected benefit from this point forward, the costs of changing, and the available alternatives.
Ask yourself: knowing what I know today, would I choose this strategy again? If the answer is no, identify what still justifies keeping it. There may be a sound reason; “I have come too far” calls for further examination.
Goals can also serve as reference points for evaluating gains and losses. Heath, Larrick, and Wu, 1999. As an illustration, someone may improve a personal best yet feel they failed because they expected more progress. Compare the change with the starting point and examine whether the goal remains appropriate. Frustration tells you something about the expectation; alone, it does not demonstrate that the plan should be intensified.

The plan must fit the days you actually have
When reviewing a strategy, include the conditions for carrying it out. A plan that depends on time slots you rarely have needs to be discussed with that constraint in mind. An option that looks convenient on paper may be unavailable on your route from work to training.
Anticipating obstacles allows you to identify alternatives: “if I leave later, I will use the meal option agreed on in advance”; “if my usual time becomes unworkable, I will check the alternative session defined with my coach.” These are examples of preparation, not universal prescriptions.
Difficulties with food or training may also involve access, work, caring for others, and health issues. Reducing them to a thinking error weakens the assessment and places responsibility on individuals for problems that require other solutions.
What was it like to live with this plan?
“Was it worth it?” and “what were my days like?” explore different aspects. An achievement may matter deeply while requiring a routine you do not want to repeat. A disappointing outcome may obscure weeks when the process worked well.
In a study of medical procedures, retrospective pain ratings were strongly related to the most painful moment and the end of the experience; duration did not receive equivalent weight. The finding describes that context without proving that every memory of training follows the same rule. Redelmeier and Kahneman, 1996.
The application here is to broaden the information available at the review. Alongside the overall impression, revisit records made close to the events: what was it like to manage meals, coordinate schedules, and attend training? What brought satisfaction? Which difficulties kept recurring? A few useful notes may be more workable than monitoring every detail of the day.
Compare these accounts with the outcomes and with what you value. A demanding period may make sense for an important goal; the effort needs to be understood and discussed. A good memory of the finish does not erase the costs along the way. And an enjoyable routine alone does not demonstrate effectiveness. Both kinds of information belong in the decision.

A guide for your next review
Use this guide when there is room to review a strategy change calmly. It organizes a conversation; it does not determine a diagnosis, dose, training load, or need for treatment.
The guide is complete when the change has an explicit reason, a way to assess it, and understandable boundaries. Checking every item does not turn an unsuitable proposal into a good intervention.
The decision must remain open to evidence
You do not need to distrust every feeling. You need to recognize when a feeling is carrying more authority than the data allow.
The next time a bad workout makes you want to change everything, look for the information missing between the event and the conclusion. When an improvement seems to confirm everything, perform the same check.
A strategy becomes more consistent when it can be explained before the outcome, examined during execution, and corrected afterward. The review includes what it delivered and what it was like to live with it. That work is part of performance, too.
